7 Ways Fasting Can Do Wonders For Your Skin!
The practice of fasting has been a part of many faiths and traditions since time immemorial. Research shows fasting helps brain growth too.
But who knew it has such amazing benefits for your skin!? Fasting literally means to abstain from all or some kind of foods and drinks for a limited period of time.
“We fast not to please the divine, but to cleanse our body,” says Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of The International Association For Human Values, “You overwork your liver, stomach and pancreas so much. If there was a labor court for the body, all these organs would have complained against you in that court. We don’t allow them to rest at all! We drink and eat the whole day until night, and we overwork our system. They do need some rest and for that you need to fast.”
Here are some more ways fasting can help you cleanse your system and make your skin glow brighter1) Helps fight eczema and acne
According to Ayurveda experts, it has been commonly seen that acne and other skin conditions like eczema clear up quickly when a person fasts for short periods of time. Fasting helps flush out toxins that may cause acne. When this happens, the body is able to refresh and re-balance itself. This can help reduce breakouts.2) Water fasting Improves blood circulation
Water fasting is when your diet for that day comprises exclusively of water or fluids. This practice is known to increase the blood circulation in your body. Blood impurities are one of the most common causes of skin disorders. When the blood circulation improves through a fasting detox, it is likely to show in your skin tone.3) Detoxification
Our skin simply reflects the state of our health. Fasting is one of the easiest detoxification exercises and is part of many full-fledged Ayurveda treatments. It helps take out the toxins or Ama which gets accumulated in our body over time. Fasting is a good practice for repair and maintenance of our skin.4) Gives rest to your digestion
Given the pace of our lifestyle, we find ourselves constantly hogging food and drink without much awareness. Our systems seldom get enough rest. “By fasting, you free yourself temporarily from spending energy on digestion and this helps you divert your body’s energy to heal and regenerate other parts” says Dr. Nibin, Sri Sri Ayurveda consultant.5)Reduces skin inflammation
According to Dr. Nibin, fasting also helps reduce skin inflammation caused by sensitivity to certain plants, foods, jewelry, cosmetics or soaps.6) Colon cleansing helps absorb more nutrients
With fasting, as you expel toxins from your body, it also cleanses your colon. When your colon is cleansed, your body is able to absorb more nutrients from what you eat. When absorption is more, there is less Ama or toxin built up in the system. Ama is nothing but the accumulation of undigested and unassimilated substances in the body.
“When your body is cleansed and healthy, it is able to repair damaged cells and regenerate skin tissues better,” says Dr. Nibin, “This results in a glowing skin.”7)Reduces the stress on the skin
The rest that the body receives from fasting enables the body to repair itself from the impact of all the stress and detractors in our environment also. This speeds up the process of cell renewal and heals any skin damage faster. The result is a youthful skin.
So go easy on your stomach every once in a while (/a week?!) to feel your skin come alive!
