5 skin care tips as you step into your 30’s
The topic reminds me of a particular episode from the popular FRIENDS show, 'Where they all turn 30.' Those laugh lines don’t make you laugh anymore. Now the hangovers from beach visits have begun to show on your face as pigments that refuse to leave. You find adult acne revisiting you, bringing back not-so-pleasant memories from your teens. The skin isn’t elastic anymore. Welcome to your 30’s.
But here’s the good news. It does not have to be that way, if you just follow the signs from your body and give it what it needs and more importantly when it needs them.
Here’s what happens to your skin in your 30’s
The production of collagen and elastin in your skin, responsible for the elasticity and skin texture, starts slowing down, as hormonal levels begin to drop post 30. The body’s ability to produce hyaluronic acid also takes a hit which can result in skin hardening or drying up, deep wrinkles, and laugh lines around the eyes. It is also possible that around this age, the skin takes longer to recover from the after-effects of exposure to sun and pollutants, resulting in hyperpigmentation. Your skin could also start developing Marionette lines or vertical lines that occur from lack of moisture or the skin losing moisture all too quickly. When this happens in your early thirties, you can explore products that are enriched with sources of vitamins like A, E, or C. Most of the Shankara serums, body lotions, and moisturizers have vitamin e tocopherol, amino acids, sodium hyaluronate, and herbal extracts rich in antioxidants like ashwagandha, Brahmi, chamae rose, calendula, unrefined shea butter, among other nutrient-rich fresh-off-the-garden ingredients.
According to experts, changes in skin and other physical features due to the hormonal changes are inevitable after 30, but the impact can be much worse if you are into drinking, smoking, lack exercise, tan easy and live on an unhealthy nutritionally lacking diet each day. Here’s what you can do to keep glowing through the thriving thirties.
1. Skin cleansing is non-negotiable
Make sure you are cleansing your face at least twice a day. You need to do this for the anti-aging creams and serums to work better for your skin. It also readies your skin cells to perform their regular function better, so it never stops looking radiant and healthy. It also helps maintain the size of skin pores; prevents the accumulation of excess oils and purges the skin of pollutants and dirt that tend to build up and block the follicles. You need to pick your skin cleanser wisely.
For dry (or Vata) skin
Vata skin is dry. It does not show redness or sensitivity. When the dosha is out of balance, the skin is likely to look dull and grey. Vata skin ages faster than other skin types. If your skin gets flaky and hard, your cleanser should be cream-based like Shankara’s Hydrating Cleanser.
For oily (or Kapha) skin
Kapha skin is evenly oily and does not show redness or sensitivity. Out of balance, it can look pale or swollen. Kapha skin ages slowly. For such a skin, you need non-oil-based and light cleanser like the Kapha pacifying Shankara’s Purifying Cleanser.
Here’s your complete guide to picking the ideal facial cleanser for other skin types too like combination or sensitive skin.
2. Exfoliate overnight
Once you turn 30, you have to make overnight exfoliation a part of your routine. In the night, the skin renews itself while we physically rest. This is yet another reason why you need to get your 8 hours of beauty sleep after hitting 30. To support the renewal, it is a good idea to rid the kin of dead skin cells, excess sebum and all the other goop. For those with oily skin, exfoliate twice a week. Here are five top tips to wash your face right, without damaging the skin one bit.
For a holistic, thorough, and flawless deep pore cleansing, you can go for the Shankara Microcrystal Exfoliation Treatment. The ultra-fine natural silica crystals combine with aloe gel and five algae extract to gently snuff away dry, dead cells revealing a healthy, youthful glow that is tangibly soft. It soothes and protects new skin. It is gentle and non-damaging to capillaries and pores.
3. Definitely start using sunscreen
Any dermatologist worth his salt will tell you, the years to be adventurous with your skin while outdoors is behind you once you hit 30. Wear sunscreens when you step out because tans will not only take longer to correct but may also leave behind pigmentation and blotches. Make sure you are also using an antioxidant-rich serum along with sunscreens to replenish a lot of nutrients and important minerals that your skin needs to be healthy and vibrant. Shankara’s Anti-age serum is a 100% active serum that combines the goodness of as many as a dozen and rarer herbal ingredients and natural actives including Gotu kola, sandalwood, mandarin, Echinacea Purpurea, ashwagandha, neem, gooseberries, sodium hyaluronate and chamae rose to deeply moisturize and rejuvenate your skin making it visibly brighter and healthier. Brahmi, a key ingredient in the serum, is rich in antioxidants and enhances rejuvenation and oxygenation. Chamae Rose is energizing, rejuvenating, and supports natural skin renewal. Liposome ATP extract is derived from milk protein and is able to energize and hydrate the skin while supporting healthy aging.
4. Stay hydrated
As hyaluronic acid production is on the decline once you reach 30, you need to pay special attention to your skin and body’s hydration needs. The skin will tend to dry up quickly. So drink about 4 liters of water every day, to maintain hydration levels of the body and for your skin, you must keep moisturizers closer to you now than ever. Avoid long hot showers as their cumulative result on the skin can be drying and produce too much heat for the skin. Use a body wash that provides sufficient hydration and moisture barrier function, like Shankara’s herb-infused Calming Body Wash, which soothes, hydrates, and calms the entire body, while the mind relaxes and the senses drink in the pleasant aroma.
You can pick a moisturizer that suits your skin dosha type. Whether it is Vata, Kapha, or Pitta skin, each has its unique moisturizing needs. What is your dosha type? Check here. For Vata skin, which tends to be out and out dry, sometimes dull, and ages faster, you can go with Shankara’s Rich Repair Moisturizer, loaded with the therapeutic benefits and antioxidants of Gotu Kola, Brahmi, arjuna, Life Everlasting, among other herbs. Read here to know more about the moisturizing needs of other skin types.
5. Post shower moisturizing ritual
After a nice shower, follow it up by applying a moisturizing body lotion on slightly wet skin. Pick a body lotion that makes the moisturizing action last, like Shankara’s Hydrating Body Silk, that simultaneously calms, soothes, hydrates, and offers relief for the most sensitive and irritated skin. It enriches your skin with the goodness of ingredients as diverse and gifted as sunflower oleic oil, polysaccharide-peptide composite, almond oil, jojoba oil, Aspen bark extract, kokum butter, Vitamin E Tocopherol, rose absolute EO, sodium hyaluronate, mandarin EO, Sandalwood EO, green tea extract, lavender extract, unrefined Shea butter extract, chamomile extract, ashwagandha extract, among others.
But most importantly, stay young at heart. Don't let the chronological number or the social expectations around it get to you. If you do it right, the '30s are indeed the new 20's, when you are brimming with ideas, hope, and energy to get where ever you have dreamt of arriving in life.
