Four Ayurvedic tips for Better Digestion

Much of the overload of toxins and free radicals in our system are created by undigested food. The following are 4 tips to help with digestion...

  • Increasing the quality of the food we eat and diminishing the amount will help. As the body gets true nourishment from fresh wholesome foods, eating less happens quite naturally. Giving a rest to the digestive system once a week by fasting or going on a very simple diet (juice, dhal) is also very helpful to prevent toxin buildup.
  • Next time you eat, try sitting down and staying seated throughout the meal. Remain seated at least 5-10 more minutes before getting up when you are done. When we stand up the Vata (related to the air element) in the midsection starts moving upward and disturbs the digestion process. Sipping a little hot water with your meal will actually help digestion. Avoid cold beverages.
  • Try eating your largest meal around 12:00 noon. Your digestive juices are the strongest during the Pitta time of the day (between 10:00 and 2:00, both midday and midnight). The second cycle of Pitta, at night will serve to cleanse the system so try not to burden it by eating at that time!
  • Having some freshly grated ginger with a little lemon juice and a pinch of salt taken before a meal helps jump-start digestion.
